Background and Main Objectives

Environmental research, oriented on the model of sustainable development and focusing on the reciprocal impact of human activity on the environment, is intended to create knowledge, about the interaction between ecosystems and their uses and changes caused by human intervention.

The environmental research group "Ecosystem Functioning and Global Change" is located at the University of Lüneburg and is comprised of a team of natural and social scientists as well as engineers, who deal with these questions in inter- and transdisciplinary projects at national and international level.

The central aims of the work of the research group encompasses global and climatic changes, as well as socioeconomic processes, which pose immediate and serious consequences, particularly upon terrestrial ecosystems and their functioning, and questions about ecological performance, earth and land use, anthropogenic impact on landscape evolution, and the future management of water and soil resources.
